PhD Program
Objectives
- Emphasize research excellence through extensive knowledge and skill sets as well as traditional and scientific approaches.
- Develop and enhance the research inquiry on Piṭaka-centerd Pāḷi literature along with parallel versions of different Buddhist sects.
- Enable to contribute research originality within the field of Buddhist studies and other related disciplines.
- Empower to define and formulate clearly-articulated research questions and methods to address important issues or problems in societies
- Reinforce a strong research process with quality assurance and quality control.
- Highlight and gain the research integrity with clear-cut ethical value, objectivity and constructive attitude.
- Create and provide quality research environment with substantial impact on Buddhist Studies
- Enlighten peace, justice and truth in the light of Dhamma through the high efficiency of research contribution
Entrance for PhD Course
Applicant who is applying for PhD Course –
- Must have passed MA Course with 55% of average mark from SIBA
Or - Must have passed MA Course in Humanities and Social Science (with 55% of average mark or Grade B+ or higher) from any English-medium Universities home and abroad.
Note:
Local University means Government recognized university.
International University means SIBA recognized university.
Application must include the following documents –
- Copy of degree certificates (original may be required at the time of acceptance)
- Letter of recommendation from parents/legal custodian/supervisor/abbot
- Two recent colour photos of passport size (2×2)
- Copy of Sāsana Registration ID Card/National ID Card/Passport for foreigner
- One proposal for research
A research proposal must be submitted, which should be no less than 3,500 – 4,000 words for those who completed an M.A. from SIBA or 4,500 – 6,000 words for those who completed an M.A. from other institutions.
Applicant is required to follow the entrance process:
- the presentation on the previous research work at the seminar
- the personal interview

Thesis for PhD Degree
This is an exit research work required for every student of PhD degree. The thesis must be between word limit 80,000 and 100,000 excluding table of content, acknowledgment, and bibliographies. The format of the research paper and of bibliographical references will follow the international standard and will be graded according to it.
